It has a wide range of applications and a variety of uses, but some problems are beyond its ability to control. Moisture/Condensation/Mould
Window film isn’t a quick fix airtight seal, and it won’t eliminate the issue of mould. It does improve solar heat gain and reduce glare but it won’t keep moisture out if your window seals are old and cracked, or if your window frames are damaged or failing. Repair the seals around the windows first, then apply window film.
Air Leakage
If you’re noticing air buffeting through drafty windows, window film is not the answer. High winds, pressurization issues, aging window gaskets and seals are all draft culprits and the resulting blasts of cold air result in reduced comfort levels for building occupants. Window film can improve interior comfort levels my moderating direct sunlight entering through the glazing (window) as well as moderating heat lost through the windows, window film does not impact the gaskets or seals holding the glazing in place.
Cracked or Failed Glass
Most window films are designed to hold glass in place upon accidental or intentional impact, preventing injuries due to shards of glass and break-ins by making it harder for intruders to break the glass. Window film should not be applied to any glazed surfaces that have existing chips, damage, or cracks. The glass needs to be replaced before window film can be applied.
Structural Inadequacy
Retrofitting existing windows with window film will save you money on utility bills, and improve occupant comfort- older buildings should be inspected prior to window film installation to ensure the building is structurally adequate, not deteriorating, and any natural shifting or settling wont affect window performance and safety. Window film improves window insulating power but does not enhance your buildings overall structural soundness.
